The Community Organization Program for Empowerment Uganda (COPE-U) recently organized a capacity-building workshop focused on financial literacy for community teams in Kawempe. The training, held at the Kawempe Division Community Hall, attracted over 50 participants, including representatives from women’s groups, youth associations, and local leaders.
The initiative aims to empower grassroots communities with financial management skills to foster economic independence and resilience. The training covered essential topics such as personal and group budgeting, savings strategies, investment planning, debt management, and accessing microfinance services.
Driving Economic Empowerment
Ms. Petua Isabirye, Executive Director of COPE-U, highlighted the critical role of financial literacy in community development during her opening remarks.
“Financial literacy is more than just managing money—it’s about creating opportunities for individuals and families to achieve their economic goals. Through this training, we are equipping participants with tools to improve their financial wellbeing and contribute to their community’s prosperity,” she said.
Hands-On Learning and Practical Tools
The workshop emphasized practical application, with participants engaging in group exercises, real-life case studies, and interactive discussions. Trainers demonstrated tools for tracking income and expenses and provided actionable steps to foster a culture of saving and informed financial decision-making.
One of the highlights was a session on forming and managing Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), a model that promotes community-driven financial solutions. Participants were encouraged to form savings groups and collaborate to achieve their financial goals.

COPE-U’s Vision for Financial Literacy
The financial literacy training is part of COPE-U’s broader efforts to promote sustainable development through community empowerment. The organization has pledged to support the participants through follow-up mentoring and monitoring to ensure long-term impact.
COPE-U also plans to extend similar training programs to other divisions in Kampala and beyond, reinforcing its commitment to fostering economically resilient communities across Uganda.
