The Community Organization Program for Empowerment Uganda (COPE-U) recently held a successful baking skills training workshop in Kawempe, aimed at empowering local community members with practical skills to enhance their income-generating opportunities. The event, which took place at the Kawempe Division Community Hall, brought together over 40 participants, including women, youth, and small-scale entrepreneurs eager to learn baking techniques that can help improve their livelihoods.
Equipping Communities with Practical Skills
Ms. Valerie, Program Manager at COPE-U, highlighted the importance of such capacity-building programs in supporting economic empowerment at the grassroots level.
“By teaching practical skills such as baking, we are not only providing participants with the tools to start or improve their businesses, but we are also creating opportunities for economic self-sufficiency,” she remarked.
The workshop covered a range of essential topics, from basic baking techniques to the production of various bakery products such as bread, cakes, pastries, and biscuits. Participants also learned about the business side of baking, including cost management, pricing, and marketing strategies to effectively reach potential customers.
Hands-On Training and Expertise Sharing
The interactive workshop included hands-on sessions where participants could practice their newly learned skills under the guidance of professional bakers and trainers. The training also included demonstrations on how to create bakery items with locally available ingredients, ensuring that participants could replicate the skills learned with minimal startup costs.
“I’ve always loved baking but didn’t know how to turn it into a business,” said Ms. Nansaga, one of the participants. “This training has given me the confidence to start my own bakery, and I now know how to price my products and manage my costs effectively.”
Participants Share Their Success Stories
The training received positive feedback from the community, with several participants expressing their enthusiasm about applying the skills to start small baking ventures.
“I have learned a lot from this workshop. The practical sessions made it easy to understand the techniques, and I am excited to get started with my own bakery business,” said Mr. Nsubuga, a youth representative.
COPE-U’s Ongoing Commitment to Community Empowerment
This baking skills training is part of COPE-U’s ongoing efforts to promote economic independence through skill development programs. By focusing on practical skills like baking, COPE-U aims to create avenues for self-employment and business growth, particularly for marginalized groups.
The organization plans to extend similar training programs to other communities in Kampala and beyond, ensuring that more individuals have the chance to acquire skills that can transform their lives.
